TikTok is a search engine that people scroll. That single sentence, taken seriously, changes how a content team plans a week. Publishing for the For You Page and publishing for TikTok search overlap — but they are not the same job.
Why TikTok SEO exists now
Since 2023, TikTok has surfaced search suggestions inside comment threads and pushed a persistent search bar into the primary UI. Google reported publicly that roughly 40% of Gen Z start product research on TikTok or Instagram — not Google. The platform is training its users to search, and the algorithm is rewarding content that answers those queries.
The ranking signals we optimize for
- On-screen text in the first 2 seconds. The strongest single ranking input we measure. Put the target keyword on the frame the thumbnail freezes on.
- Spoken keyword in the first 5 seconds. TikTok transcribes audio. Say the query the way a person would type it.
- Keyword-front caption. First 40 characters carry disproportionate weight. Lead with the query, not the joke.
- Dwell + rewatch. The hook shapes the ranking. A three-second retention cliff kills a video no matter how good the metadata is.
- Save rate. The strongest "this is useful" signal on the platform. Structure the ending so the viewer wants to come back to it.
The weekly workflow
- Pull the current search suggestions for your 12 seed queries.
- Cluster into three intent buckets: how-to, comparison, and category discovery.
- Write hooks that literally echo the search phrase.
- Ship one video per bucket per week. Watch which cluster indexes fastest.
- Update covers and captions on last month's videos with what the new data taught you.
What we don't do
Stuff hashtags. Copy trending sounds without an intent match. Chase view count as the primary metric. Search inventory rewards utility. If a video doesn't earn a save, it doesn't earn a rank.
Every ranked TikTok in a mature account is a landing page. Treat it like one: title, opener, body, call-to-action, refresh cycle.
